Schools of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are more than just the usual family group. They can be matriarchal nursery groups with 10-30 mature females and their offspring, juvenile schools of adolescents or even bachelor groups of young males. In the tightly-bonded nursery groups some females share babysitting duties while others hunt for food. They show great concern if one of the group is sick or injured. The group might be spread over a large area and members greet each other when they meet up, rubbing and calling to each other.
Squid is the main food of sperm whales and they dive 400-600m, deeper than most other mammals, in order to feed in the murky twilight zone. Sometimes they co-ordinate the dive with other members of the pod, spreading out to herd the prey and make it easier to catch.
