The moose (Alces alces)

Male Moose

is the largest deer species and the largest moose subspecies is the Yukon-Alaska moose. At six or seven years old, the bull carries impressive antlers spanning 1.6m that can weigh up to 32kg. These are shed each winter, growing back in the spring. The Algonquin tribe named the moose: the word means 'eater of twigs' and a moose browses several pounds of leaves, twigs and buds every day. Calves, often twins, are born in early summer. A moose cow has been known to kill bears, wolves, and even people to protect her offspring. Typically, moose have a lifespan of 16-20 years, but this is often cut short by vehicles colliding with them on forest roads.
