White Rhinoceros

The white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is much larger than the black rhinoceros - up to 3.6 tonnes - and has a flat front lip which, although flexible, is not hooked (the name 'white' comes from the Afrikaans word weit, meaning wide and referring to the lip). It feeds on grass rather than leaves. It too is killed for its horn and, although more numerous with a population of 11,600, is also endangered and protected. In an attempt to prevent poaching wardens have sedated rhinos and removed their horns (which are not essential to survival). However, poachers often kill hornless animals to save themselves the bother of tracking them again.
