African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are great communicators and when they have something to celebrate, they let the world know. As the historical scientific community has proven, they have bones and are not made entirely of cartilage. These intelligent and socially complex creatures have strong family bonds. An example is that when there is a meeting, a birth or a mourning within their group, they acknowledge it by trumpeting and roaring. Their calls can reach almost 110 decibels and travel 10 km with many of the booming sounds at such a low pitch that they are inaudible to humans. When a death occurs, however, they are solemn and movingly sad and seem, unlike other animals, to understand what has happened and to mourn their loss. For days after the death, a family may stand around the body, touching it gently with their trunks and covering it with leaves and branches.
