Animals Wiki

Various small mammals store food for the winter in a cache near their nest, but the squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a scatter hoarder, storing its winter food in several different places. Nuts and seeds are buried by digging a small pit with the front paws, dropping in the food and pressing down with its teeth, finally camouflaging the area with leaves or stones. It is useful to have a series of secret supplies if another foraging animal catches you retrieving your breakfast.

Once common in Britain but now rare, the red squirrel is widespread throughout most of Europe. During the mating season several males leap spectacularly through the branches and up and down tree trunks in pursuit of one female.
