Weighing up to 4kg with a wingspan of 109cm the Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo) has no natural enemies. It is a fearsomely efficient predator, taking victims as large as foxes and young roe deer. Its most common meals are voles and rats but it also kills hares, ducks, grouse, crows, seabirds, and other birds of prey, including other owls. Snakes, lizards, frogs, fish and crabs are also on its menu. With 14 or so subspecies, it is found across Eurasia, the Middle East and into North Africa. Its main danger of death from anything other than old age is the hazard of flying into power lines, aircraft or cars. In captivity it has been known to live for more than 60 years.
