Rimaudahan, meaning 'tree tiger', is the Malay name for the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa). It is an accomplished climber - and spends a great deal of its time up in the trees. Lying still on an overhanging branch in dappled sunlight, the clouded leopard is difficult to spot and is in an excellent position to ambush its prey. A single bite with its long canines is usually enough to dispatch its victims swiftly and these teeth, which can be up to 45mm long, have earned it the name 'modern-day sabre-tooth'.
A shy, solitary creature, the clouded leopard stays well away from civilization, seeking peace and seclusion deep in the tropical forests. It does not always manage to escape man and has been heavily hunted not just for its fur but also for its teeth and bones, which have reputed medicinal qualities.
