The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos)

spends autumn and winter roaming singly or in small packs in its constant quest for food. In these months of darkness it can survive sub-freezing temperatures and weeks without eating. Alone, the wolf will seize Arctic hare and lemmings. In the hunt for larger prey the pack work together, following migrating herds of caribou, and separate the young or weaker animals unable to outrun them. A caribou or muskox will feed the pack for several days.

A small pack of Arctic wolves is quite often a family group comprising the alpha male and alpha female, and their offspring. The cubs are born blind and helpless, relying on their mother's milk for the first four weeks and then the pack co-operates in feeding, regurgitating meat from the kill.
